Delivering letter to No 10 Downing StreetCLIMATE CHANGE SERVICE 2008

SATURDAY 6 DECEMBER, 11.30am
HINDE STREET METHODIST CHURCH, LONDON W1U 2QJ

Picture Right shows CEL members delivering Climate Letter ot 10 Downing Street as part of a groups of Campaign against Climate Change. Ruth Jarman in the picture gives an account below the summary.

Christian Ecology Link organised a Service of Worship at Hinde Street Methodist Church, 19 Thayer Street, London W1U 2QJ, at 11.30am on Saturday 6th December 2008 to coincide with the Campaign Against Climate Change's national climate march 2008.

The doors of the church were open from 10am and coffee served from 10.30am. Mark Dowd, campaigns strategist for Operation Noah, was the main speaker. Rev Paul Trathen, lead a time of reflection and prayer. After the Service people joined the Climate Change March due to leave Grosvenor Square at 1 pm.

Ruth Jarman writes:

...so, the service was wonderful!...lovely music, Mark Dowd's talk was good and the hymn "Creator god, abundant life your mark" to "For all the saints" was really good - ..and we all lit tea lights and floated them in water while singing "O lord hear my prayer..." very moving.

There were probably over 100 people in the church and the march was about 10,000.

Helen, Thomas and I joined Jonathan Essex, representing CaCC and Christine Taylor of NoTrag to deliver the letter from CaCC to no.10. Helen knocked on the door and Thomas handed the doorman the letter - WISH I'd photgraphed that!

The letter from the CaCC ended with "The true gravity, scale and immediacy of the climate crisis is still not yet reflected in the media, in most public discussion, or in government discourse, policy or priorities. It is time the government rose to the challenge. Soon it will be too late."

Ruth made the T-shirts for the event with the new CEL Logo.

The National Climate March on Dec 6th (www.campaigncc.org/ ) is part of a Global Day of Action (www.globalclimatecampaign.org)

Speakers at the End of March Rally were planned to include George Monbiot, Caroline Lucas (leader, Green party) and Michael Meacher (ex-environment minister).

The march was preceeded by a climate protest bike ride:

6 December was chosen for this global day of action because it is the the Saturday midway through the UNFCCC Climate Talks (COP 14/MOP 4), in Poznan, Poland
