Day of Prayer

The Day of Prayer is supported by the Environmental Issues Network (EIN) of Churches Together in Britain & Ireland (CTBI). A key aim is to pray for God's will to be done during the decisive Copenhagen COP 15 talks this December. Christians of all denominations are joining together to express their concerns over the seriousness and urgency of our global situation.
Sunday October 4 th was the first agreed Day of Prayer. This material is also ideal for use at any time before and during the Climate Change talks in Copenhagen from 7 th to 18 th December 2009. You can arrange a Day of Prayer as appropriate in your local situation - or you can use the material for shorter times of reflection during lunchtimes or services. The weekend of December 5 th and 6 th , when the WAVE demonstrations take place in London and Glasgow would be a very appropriate time.
We also encourage people to combine their prayer with fasting as a mark of our concern and the crucial nature of these talks. Our suggested focus for praying and fasting will be for 15 days beginning on Friday 4 th December (as delegates are briefed and leave their offices).
Although CTBI is the main site for hosting these resources, they have been written by Dr Isabel Carter, in coordination with Operation Noah. and we have permission to host them here too. For more information email: dayofprayer@operationnoah.org

Introductory Prayer for Day of Prayer
Creator God, this earth is miraculous and beautiful. Forgive our confusion and inaction as we confront the challenges of climate change. In the light of your truth, seen so clearly in the life and teaching of Jesus, help us to re-examine ourselves and our lifestyle choices and see clearly the implications of how we live on all that sustains life on this earth. May we follow your leading in caring for every aspect of this precious world, which you made, and love.
We pray for world leaders to agree a new, just and radical treaty in Copenhagen that will protect our fragile world for future generations.
Throughout history you have moved people to do amazing things for the sake of their neighbours. Inspire us now to work together, as your people, to change priorities in the way we live, so that we build a fair and safe world for all your creation; a world where your will is done as it is in heaven. Amen
