National Launch of Eco-Congregationat St Paul’s Cathedral, London, 19 Sept 2000
Some 75 people were present at the planting of a Mulberry Tree, complete with small plaque, in the garden of St Paul’s Cathedral, London, close to the statue of St Paul, to launch the Eco-Congregation programme, represented by the Rev Dr David Pickering.Speeches by Graham Ashworth , Chairman and Alan Woods, Chief Executive of Going for Green (GfG) were followed by a dedicatory service in St Faith’s Chapel in the Crypt nearby. This included a sermon by the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres and a further address by Prof Ashworth, who is also President of the Baptist Union. Members of GfG’s Steering Committee were blessed by Monsignor Arthur Roche, Secretary to the Catholic Bishop’s Conference. The Joint President of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and the Moderator of the Free Church Council also participated. Prof Sam Berry of the Environmental Issues Network read a lesson based on part of the Sermon in the Mount (Matt 6 24030) and John Biggs, Past President of the Baptist Union read from Romans Chapter 8 18-23. In the congregation were representatives/members of The Environment Issues Network of CTBI Christian Ecology Link LondonSCARE John Ray Initiative Christian Rural Concern A Rocha.
