Sample letter to your MP.
House of Commons, Having recognised the enormity of the challenge of climate change, I am changing my priorities and expectations so that I am less reliant on fossil fuels. As a first step I have ....................................................................... Please do what you can too. Do you personally support the 'Contraction and Convergence' solution to climate change? If not, what alternative solution is there? Do the Houses of Parliament use green electricity? If not, will you ask for them to consider doing so? Have you done a personal ecological footprint, or looked at ways to reduce your transport-related emissions?
Please urge the government to: Be clear what it is doing to get the 'Contraction and Convergence' policy implemented or why it is advocating any other option. Take action to fulfil and exceed the Energy White Paper commitment to achieve a 60% reduction in emissions from 1990 to 2050 by investing in renewable energy - deeds not words. Re-think transport proposals so that transport-related emissions start going down, looking particularly at more investment in rail and more limits on air. Also investment in tele-conferencing, making journeys less necessary. Help poor countries deal with increasing climate-related risks, and develop a low-carbon economy, adding £20 million to the spending on this, and stop giving aid for oil industry investments, which do little to benefit the poor and sometimes much to harm them. Thank you. Yours sincerely,
