3. SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES ACT AMENDMENT BILL BECOMES LAW
The Sustainable Communities Act Amendment Bill successfully passed
through its final House of Commons stages and all its House of Lords
stages. This means that a second round of grass roots local
initiatives, and an ongoing process under the original Act, is
guaranteed. It also means that Parish and Town Councils will be
formally included in that process. The Local Works Campaign are now
trying to ensure two things:
1. that the proposals from the first round of the process are granted
by Government, either before, though more likely after, the
election, and
2. that people, communities and councils get involved in the second
round when it starts.
CEL continues to support this effort to enable local communities to
have more say in their own affairs. For more information visit

4. GET OUT AND ABOUT TO APPRECIATE NATURE
Last week a group from my church went on a walk/climb up Pen Y Ghent,
as also did a Leeds CEL member and his friends. There are lots of
ways to appreciate Nature. Some Nature Things worth doing:
a) Take part in the Opal Project
http://www.opalexplorenature.org/?q=surveys e.g. lichen surveys
b) Organise a Dawn Chorus walk - International Dawn Chorus Day - 2
May www.idcd.info . Towns and Cities can be exciting at 4.30- 6.00
in the morning before everyone has got up .. It's the best
time!-- then you could have a shared breakfast.
c) May 15th is National Moth Night - this year the theme is Moths and
Bats. So people with bat detectors are very welcome. Churchyards
with wildflowers to attract moths and moths to attract bats and
with bats are very useful for such surveys.
http://www.nationalmothnight.info/
d) Sun 9th May is Rogation Day.
Some of you may be lucky enough to have a CofE priest happy to
organise an outdoor event. Do find out if there is one near you
and then publicise it. (and tell me too)
e) 5 June is World Environment Day.
http://www.unep.org/wed/2010/english/
f) 6 June is Environment Sunday.
http://www.christian-ecology.org.uk/environment-sunday.htm
Why not organise a Wildflower Walk from your church? Invite a
local naturalist to help if you wish.
g) Invite a foreign student studying at a university to come and stay
for a weekend through "Hosts" - www.hostuk.org.uk -- Taking a
visitor out and looking at your surroundings in a new light is
like having a holiday itself.
