1. TIME FOR CREATION
Every year, from 1 September - the first day of the Orthodox Church
year - to 4 October - the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi in the
Catholic tradition - churches are called to become involved in the
'Time for Creation' for the protection of God's creation and the
promotion of sustainable lifestyles. This year, churches are
encouraged to focus on the theme of biodiversity, 2010 being the UN
Year of Biodiversity, and on Africa. Materials for Time for Creation
are available in different languages at the website of the World
Council of Churches and the European Christian Environmental Network
(ECEN) http://www.ecen.org . Churches Together in Britain and Ireland
(CTBI) also offer sermon notes, prayers, and other materials for
churches to observe 'Creation flourishing - A time for celebration
and care' at: http://www.ctbi.org.uk/creationtime.

2. 10:10:10 GLOBAL WORK DAY
In 2010, 'Time for Creation' extends to 10 October, to
join the 10:10:10 campaign. You can help make 10:10:10 the biggest
day of carbon cutting that the world has ever seen by doing
something that will help deal with global warming in your city or
community! Find out more at http://www.350.org/oct10
CEL is calling all our members and friends - YOU - to do something to
cut the carbon at your own church at service time on Sunday 10
October. Can you plant a tree, bike to church, fit an energy-saving
light bulb, invite a speaker to encourage the congregation to reduce
their carbon footprint in their everyday lives? Let us know your
plans and we'll tell the world what you're doing - well, we'll send
out a press release!

3. END DOMESTIC FLIGHTS NOW!
End domestic flights now! Join the Campaign against Climate Change's
demos at London City or Manchester airports on Saturday 4th September
or make use of the 'train-not-planes' party carriage from Euston and
go to both!

4. PARTY CONFERENCES
Is anyone going to one of the Party Conferences this autumn? If so,
please get in touch with us and we can send you a batch of 'Storm of
Hope' pamphlets to hand out to people -- especially useful to do so
at an environmental fringe meeting.
Two CEL members are arranging a fringe meeting at the Green Party
Conference at Birmingham, Sunday 12th September. Please contact John
Vivian if you can help with that john.vivian@ntlworld.com

5. CHURCH BELLS RING TO HIGHLIGHT TOLL OF BIODIVERSITY
Church bells across the country will ring in tune with the United
Nations next month to mark crucial international talks on
biodiversity. As the bells toll at the UN headquarters in both New
York and Nairobi, bell ringers from small parish churches to large
cathedrals and minsters are being encouraged to ring on September 22.
2010 is the UN's International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) and the
Church of England is one of the official partners in the UK. The UN
General Assembly will discuss for the first time ever the crisis
affecting the world's biodiversity on September 22, underlining the
importance of how plants, animals and life as we know it are all
linked and the loss of one species through human actions can affect
many others.
