Happy New Year

Bradford Lights
Complexities:
View of Bradford - on Monday night - How much energy going to outer space? - View taken from the darkness, two miles past the last house, three miles up a very dark, steep, unsalted hoarfrost/sheet ice road - on the side of Ilkely Moor.

"On Ilkley Moor by t'at" is the best tune for "While Sheherds Watched" (Try it and enjoy it) -- "Ilkley Moor" is the ecologists song! -- Are these lights the "shining throng?"

Sometimes when it is dark you can see a long way .. I couldn't quite see all the world.. but I thought of you, dear reader, living somewhere round the world.. Happy Christmas.. more

CEL is sad to learn that Howard Wass died on 10 October - while playing table tennis we are told.

Howard Wass was a Methodist Local preacher and Organic Farmer in the North Yorkshire Moors. He ran several workshops for Christian Ecology Link - at the National Conference and for Ripon and Harrogate Christian Ecology Group. (Pic. from 1988)

Barbara Echlin writes:"He was one of the pioneers in organic farming. I'll never forget him showing us round the large airy sweet smelling barn where his cattle were over-wintering -- it was so peaceful, and his stock looked so contented -- it was like being in a cathedral."

www.localworks.org is a campaign to get a Bill passed in Parliament to revitalise Britain's towns and villages by giving more power back down to local communities.

NUMBER 1 MP AGREES TO TAKE UP THE SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES BILL -23 November

Excellent news for the Sustainable Communities Bill Campaign Today Nick Hurd, MP for Ruislip-Northwood, was the first MP drawn in the Private Members Ballot and he has agreed to adopt the Sustainable Communities Bill and take it through Parliament.

This is the result of 3 years hard work campaigning and means we are almost there. We can now WIN this campaign and see the Sustainable Communities Bill being made law by next year. We (Local works) would like to say a big thank you to all our supporters whose help and actions have made this possible. WELL DONE and keep up the good work...

Archbishop Tutu's prayer for Darfur: tutuprayer_359.pdf (733 kilobytes)

Intro to ArchBishop of Canterbury's Prayer: "We do well to reflect on that experience of southern Sudan as we pray for Darfur today. We are all under judgement for how we exercise the power we have, whether it is great or small.

When in Matthew's gospel the disciples asked Jesus 'when did we visit you in prison, or when did we see you naked or hungry? 'He replied, 'When you clothed, visited and fed the least of your brothers and sisters, you did so to me.'

So my prayer as a Christian is that we may live internationally as we seek to live locally: knowing that we are all children of God, with no more value in the eyes of God than those whose names and villages we do not know. " Prayer

Today-two Private Members' Bills are due for their Second Reading in the House of Commons:The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill plus the Management of Energy Bill.

These bills will, between them, if passed, require: year on year reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, an annual report to Parliament on progress, a fiscal strategy to assist microgeneration and energy efficiency, permitted development status for the installation of microgeneration and the revision of building regulations to promote microgeneration.

It requires a huge lobbying effort by supporters to encourage the necessary 100 MPs to be present on a Friday afternoon to vote for these bills. MPs are also urged to sign EDM no.391 to support the bills.

    ----------------------------

Sat 12: The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill will go forward
to the Committee stage with Government support (subject to major reservations!).

Bishop Hugh Montefiore suggests these guidelines in his book Preaching For Our Planet, Mowbray, 1992.

I am the Lord your God: you shall have no other gods but me.

You shall not make to yourself any graven image or idol, such as GNP or possessions or riches, whether in the heavens above, or in the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth: you shall not bow down and serve them.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain by calling on His name, but ignoring His natural law.

Remember that you set apart one day in the week for true festivity, or you will be bored stiff in the technological age you are bringing on yourselves.

Honour your father and mother, but do not seek to prolong their term of life so that they are miserable.

You shall not murder future generations by your present greed.

You shall not commit sexual sin by producing more children than is your right.

You shall not steal the inheritance of posterity.

You shall not bear false witness against your overseas neighbours by lying to yourself about the extent of their need.

You shall not covet an ever-increasing standard of living.

Here are some possible questions to ask election candidates.

But first: well before the meeting
find out how questions are asked.. often it is necessary to hand in the questions to the chairperson BEFORE the meeting

    Invite some young people

    • All main UK political parties agree that greenhouse gas emissions have to be reduced drastically if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. How would your party do this? What legislation, regulation and/or taxes would you propose? (e.g. an international agreement on aviation pollution and fuel-pricing; congestion charging; tax differentials between the least polluting and highest polluting cars).
    • The Kyoto protocol does not cover carbon dioxide emissions beyond 2012. What national targets would you propose for 2020 and how would you meet them?
    • What measures would you promote to encourage waste reduction?

A planet on the brink. Article from the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Independent on Sunday 17 April 2005

Too often in recent decades, the two big “e” words -- ecology and economy -- have been used as though they represented opposing concerns. Yes, we should be glad to do more about the environment, if only this didn’t interfere with economic development and the liberty of people and nations to create wealth in whatever ways they can.

Or, we should be glad to address environmental issues if we could be sure that we had first resolved the challenge of economic injustice within and between societies. So from both left and right there has often been a persistent sense that it isn’t proper or possible to tackle both together, let alone to give a different sort of priority to ecological matters.

But this separation or opposition has come to look like a massive mistake. It has been said that ‘the economy is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the environment’. The earth itself is what ultimately controls economic activity because it is the source of the materials upon which economic activity works. Read the whole article

This week especially, we wish a happy life to Charles and Camilla.

The Pope died this month and had his funeralLet us remember Pope John Paul, and thank God for his life. Let us think of those mourning in Rome and elsewhere, and of those cardinals who will soon have to choose a new Pope.

Words from a talk by Pope John Paul II on 17 January 2001:

"If we scan the regions of our planet, we immediately see that humanity has disappointed God's expectations. Man, especially in our time, has without hesitation devastated wooded plains and valleys, polluted waters, disfigured the earth's habitat, made the air unbreathable, disturbed the hydrogeological and atmospheric spheres and turned luxuriant areas into deserts and undertaken forms of unrestrained industrialization, humiliating the flower-garden of the universe to use the image of Dante Alighieri (Paradiso, XXII, 151.). We must therefore encourage and support the 'ecological conversion' which in recent decades has made humanity more sensitive to the catastrophe to which it has been heading. Man is no longer the Creator's 'steward', but an autonomous despot, who is finally beginning to understand that he must stop at the edge of the abyss". Ref.

Foot and Mouth: Sat 23 June 2001

    The slaughter goes on.
Vehicles have been passing the very window near Settle from where this web page is being written each day for five weeks, though there are far fewer of them over the last two weeks as the cull and the centre of operations has moved 12 miles further south: green army vehicles, yellow JCB loaders (vehicles to scoop up the carcasses), white vans with disinfectant, red lorries to take the animal bodies away.... The car parks and road sides in Settle were full of these vehicles. The scale at which animals are being removed must be colossal. The bills to pay the lorry drivers and workers in the process must also be colossal.

David Curry, local (Conservative) MP came to a public meeting on Friday 22 June at Skipton, near Settle. Margaret Beckett (Labour) of Defra is scheduled to visit Skipton on Monday 25th

There are many other parts of the country - Devon, Cumbria and elsewhere where the cull has been going on much longer and where farmers and people in the tourist industry are equally suffering.

    • for farmers pressurised into making quick decisions about losing their animals by people around them
    • especially as there is sometimes confusion and mistakes about which areas to cull
    • for adjacent farmers worried about losing their animals
    • for people in the tourist industry losing their jobs and their businesses
    • for other environmental implications, such as river quality, and the fact that often scientists do not have access to monitor these
    • for all people having to make difficult decisions in this situation, and for those carrying out the work

Recommended Book for December: Our World, God's World - Reflections for Advent and the Christmas Season on the Environment - by Barbara Wood ISBN 0 900164 69 7

Advent is the time when we prepare for Jesus's coming.. At the RCDecoration with message on being put on Tree Branch in background at St Joseph's Primary School, Keighley Primary School St Joseph's in Keighley, Yorkshire, the five year olds made an advent tree on the 1st December 2000. Each child made a decoration and (with help) wrote on it how he or she had chosen to be especially good during this period.

Perhaps Christians could use this time to think, as we look forward to Christ's coming, of the best way we could especially try to look after His World

    July 1999

Friday 9 July  Harrogate and District Christian Ecology Link Summer Meeting was a Farm Walk at Hopewell House Farm, Hey-A-Park, Knaresborough, led by Simon Webster of the Farming and Wildlife Group We learnt many ways in which parts of the farm had been managed over the years to improve the diversity of wildlife. We learnt much too about the economics of farming and how economic decisions have to be made about whether it is worthwhile applying pesticides on different parts of this arable farm.

    Sunday 4th July
On Sunday the fourth of July, 1999, 2:00 p.m., the last of a series of services was held on the site of the Greenwood on the A38 between Weeford Island and Basset's Pole island. These services have taken place on the first Sunday of each month since December 1997, during which the Lord's Supper has been celebrated. This last service was a remembrance service for past friends and homes. In accordance with the wishes of his friends and family the ashes of 'Sorted Dave' was be scattered at the site. Boundary Cottage, Monymore Cottages, Greenwood, houses close to Chasewater, and the Spinney, all have gone. Violent men laid their hands on them and showed their authority in the only way they know, by sowing death and destruction. May God protect us at harvest time.

    January 1999:

The Pope mentions the environment in his Christmas and New Year Speeches
In his Christmas Urbi et Orbi Message he asks " May Christmas help to strengthen and renew, throughout the world, the consensus concerning the need for urgent and adequate measures ......to give environmental issues, especially after the recent natural catastrophes, the indispensable attention which they deserve for the protection of creation and of human dignity!" At the same site the World Day of Peace Message can be found for January 1st 1999. He mentions genetic engineering and has a substantial section on the environment which he again links closely to human dignity. The message includes the following:

    "Responsibility for the Environment
    10. The promotion of human dignity is linked to the right to a healthy environment, since this right highlights the dynamics of the relationship between the individual and society. A body of international, regional and national norms on the environment is gradually giving juridic form to this right. But juridic measures by themselves are not sufficient. The danger of serious damage to land and sea, and to the climate, flora and fauna, calls for a profound change in modern civilization's typical consumer life-style, particularly in the richer countries. Nor can we underestimate another risk, even if it is a less drastic one: people who live in poverty in rural areas can be driven by necessity to exploit beyond sustainable limits the little land which they have at their disposal. Special training aimed at teaching them how to harmonize the cultivation of the land with respect for the environment needs to be encouraged.

The world's present and future depend on the safeguarding of creation, because of the endless interdependence between human beings and their environment. Placing human well-being at the centre of concern for the environment is actually the surest way of safeguarding creation; this in fact stimulates the responsibility of the individual with regard to natural resources and their judicious use."

    November 1998:

28 November: The London Churches Conference on the Environment took place at Southwark Cathedral. It was chaired by the Bishop of London and the key speakers were David Bellamy, Hugh Montefiore and Graham Ashworth. A least twenty seven CEL members were present. Do look at this page which I have written. It has nice pictures

24 November: Going for Green (the environment awareness charity) announced that the person who is to take on the brand new post of 'Churches Environmental Project Officer' is Rev Dr David Pickering. The project is being developed by Going for Green in partnership with EIN (the Environmental Issues Network of the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland).David, who studied environmental science before entering the ministry is currently a URC minister at Norton, Stockton on Tees. He will be leading the Eco-Congregation project and will be moving with his family to Wigan to start his new job on February 1st.

    October 1998:

    European Christian Environment Network

The European delegates visit an organic farm near Vilemov

From 21 to 25 October a meeting took place of European Church Environmental Officers in Vilemov in the Czech Republic. This was to establish a network of environment officers from European Churches. It is called the European Christian Environment Network. Sixty people from twenty four European countries gathered at the Orthodox Academy in Vilemov,

On the continent many churches have an officer whose specific job it is to deal with environmental matters. Sadly this is not the case in Britain.. in many denominations here, dealing with the vast topic of "The environment" is just a one small part of another overfilled job.

Several people went to this meeting from Britain including

David Pickering took a supply of copies of CEL's Resources leaflet to give to participants of the Conference, plus some demonstration copies of the Sustainable Living Pack. The Conference organisers sent CEL copies of some very useful papers. e.g Creation Day - What counts is action and Church Environment Management

A ECEN home page on the Internet has been set up for communication amongst its members

    CEL Annual Members' Meeting

CEL's 1998 Annual Members Meeting was held at Bath on October 10th. The guest speaker, Amber Carroll, Clerk of the Quaker Ethics and Genetics Network, spoke on
" The need for church members to engage in the gene debate"

    CEL Denominational Teams

Rev David Fudger has succeeded Alan Griggs as leader of the Anglican Team. Steve Retout and Sr Ancilla are now joint leaders of the Catholic team. An informal meeting to discuss future strategy was held at Minster Abbey in August. It was agreed to press for the appointment of diocesan environmental co-ordinators.

    The Environment Issues Network (EIN)

CEL is a member of this national church-based network. This network has a meeting twice a year and the different church denominations send their environmental representative, so that the denominations can exchange information about what is happening in the other denominations. As this network is not funded, it simply acts as an opportunity for information exchange. Christian Ecology Link is represented by Raymond Tringham

Their latest meeting was held on Tuesday 19th October. Donald Bruce introduced the new book which he edited, Engineering Genesis. The members were pleased to welcome, for the first time, a representative of the Salvation Army.

    Churches Environment Project Officer

The organisation Going for Green is in the process of appointing a Churches Environment Project Officer, who once appointed will start work in February. The holder of this post will head up an Eco Church Award scheme and will also provide support for the Environmental Issues Network in encouraging environmental activities within the churches.

    Multilateral Agreement on Investment

CEL is a supporter of this group of organisations expressing concerns about the proposed Multilateral Agreement on Investment. We were represented at a very well attended seminar at the House of Commons on 21 October. CEL Steering committee member Raymond Tringham attended as did Jennifer Potter (International Secretary for the Methodist Church). The latest round of negotiations had started on the previous day under OECD auspices. It was reported that France had withdrawn and that the process might pass to the World Trade Organisation.

The speakers included the Bishop of Swindon who made the point that there should be more emphasis on the responsibilities rather than the rights of the cross national firms whose investment was at issue. Most speakers felt that some international rules were desirable but that they should be framed through the UN with due regard to the position of less developed countries and they should specifically impose on the multinationals an obligation to observe international agreements such as those made at Rio and Kyoto. Supporters were urged to ask their MPs to sign Early Day Motion 1672 and to press newspaper editors to give the matter more coverage. ( MAI Coalition, 60, Sandmere Rd SW4 7QJ- Email)
